Biological age
Morgan Levine's PhenoAge formula, worked over nine values from a standard blood panel.
What you need first
Nine values off an ordinary blood panel, plus your age. This is not a questionnaire: it works on your own numbers, which is exactly why it is worth more than the free tests that ask how you sleep.
- Albumin
- Creatinine
- Glucose
- CRP
- Lymphocyte percentage
- Mean cell volume (MCV)
- Red cell distribution width (RDW)
- Alkaline phosphatase (ALP)
- White blood cells
All nine sit on a standard panel. So if you have had blood taken by your doctor or at a workplace check in the last year, they are almost certainly on that result already. Ask your practice for a copy, or read them off your own patient portal. Values in mg/dL, mmol/L, g/L or µmol/L all work: pick your unit next to the field and the conversion is done for you.

How does this calculation work?
- The formula
- PhenoAge turns nine blood values and your calendar age into a ten-year mortality risk, then converts that risk back into the age at which it would be average.
- What you enter
- Albumin, creatinine, glucose, CRP, lymphocyte percentage, mean cell volume, red cell distribution width, alkaline phosphatase, white blood cells and your age.
- What it was built and tested on
- Built on NHANES III and tested on NHANES IV, two large United States population studies with decades of follow-up.
- The paper

- What it does not tell you
- It is a mortality prediction from blood chemistry, not a measurement of your cells. Nothing is read off your DNA.
- One blood result is one moment. An infection, a heavy training week or dehydration moves several of these values at once.
- It was built and tested on United States population research from the nineties. There is no Dutch validation, so how well it holds here is not known.
